In his ground breaking book "How the Scots Invented the Modern World", the author Arthur Herman lists an astonishing array of seemingly ordinary things invented or fathered by a Scotsman.
Most of these men were not rich or upper class; they came from the lonely crofts (small rented farms), the bleak hill farms, and the teeming tenements of the cities.
