Angus and The MacLellan Mixer

Of all the MacLellans we've seen so far, I believe Angus best embodies the Scottish spirit of ingenuity and inventiveness. Angus is the only MacLellan in the MacLellan Clan to hold a patent from the US Patent office.

The patent was for what Angus called a "Percentage Feeder and Mixer", commonly known as the "MacLellan Mixer". It was designed to combine and mix small, fine materials. It was sold throughout the country, and in fact there is at least one still in existence today.

Unfortunately Angus was a better inventor than businessman. Although he held the patent, and formed a company to market it, he never made a lot of money from the mixer, and eventually sold the patents.

Angus's inventiveness was a clear Scottish trait. His daughter marvelled at how he designed it starting with a large can of oatmeal.

Speaking of oatmeal, my mother only had one memory of her paternal grandfather. It occurred when Angus and his second wife Maude were visiting their son Lee at Lee's home in Bethlehem Pennsylvania.

Angus looked at my mother and only had one thing to say: "Have ye had your porridge today?" I don't know how my mother replied, but I do know she was not a fan of oatmeal.
