"The Genius of Scotland"

Information on this page is largely taken from a 1997 NY Times newspaper article of the same title.

If the people of Scotland are its greatest asset, its educational system is a leading reason why.

Scotland is a classic example of the power of good schools. For its' size, historians believe that Scotland in the past spent more money on education than any other European country.

In addition to the inventions listed earlier, Scotland gave the world:

  • Insulin Dr. Frederick Bann and his assistant Charles Best made the discovery in the laboratory of Dr. John McLeod.

  • Penicillin The initial discovery of the bacteria destroying effects of penicillin was made by Alexander Fleming

  • Discovered the cause of malaria (Ronald Ross)

  • Transmitted the first television image (John Logie Baird)

438 years old, the University of Edinburgh is one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

In 2020 a study done by QA World University Rankings ranked it among the top 20 universities in the world.

It is considered one of the best universities in the world for arts and humanities, but also for computer science.

Its curriculum was forged in the 18th century during what became known as the Scottish Enlightenment, and it became the model for liberal arts colleges around the world.
