The Lee MacLellan Family Story
E. Winslow ("Bill") Councill - Son In-Law
I think my uncle, Edward Winslow Councill (1923 - 1983) (called Bill his whole life) was one of the most intelligent men I ever knew. I didn't know that he was in the Intelligence Branch of his service, and that he worked for the National Security Agency (NSA).
Bill Councill was offered a job at IBM after the war to utilize their technology in security. But like many corporations in those days, he first had to work as a typewriter salesman in Philadelphia! He went on to sell the NSA and the County of Montgomery MD huge numbers of the first IBM computers.

These big sales were probably a big factor in IBM naming him "Salesman of the Year" for the entire corporation!
Personally, Bill Councill was also one of the most caring, kind gentleman I ever knew.
Bill Councill was the middle son of James Paul Councill and Irva Winslow, called "Miss Irva". The Councills were a powerful and well known family in Franklin VA. My wife and I got to know Paul when he was in Richmond as a delegate to the Virginia Assembly. He was called one of the three most effective delegates in the Assembly by the local paper.

Paul Councill owned a cottage right on the beach at Nags Head, NC. directly east of the Wright Brothers Memorial. Paul also owned a fishing boat, and Bill Councill caught this marlin off the coast. It most have been a significant struggle, as Bill later had the marlin stuffed and displayed in his basement.
Along the way he met and married Sally MacLellan on August 3, 1946 in Bethlehem, PA. They had one daughter, Diana Lynn Councill. After a brief stint in Richmond VA, the family moved to Bethesda, MD, right outside of Washington, DC, where they lived until Bill died unexpectedly and suddenly in 1983. He was only 60.
